What is the TEF Canada Exam?

The TEF Canada (Test d'Évaluation de Français pour le Canada) is a standardized French language proficiency test designed specifically for Canadian immigration purposes. Recognized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), it assesses your ability to communicate in French across four essential skills: reading, listening, writing, and speaking.

TEF Canada Overview

Administered by the Chambre de commerce et d'industrie de Paris Île-de-France through Le français des affaires, the TEF Canada is one of two French language tests accepted by IRCC for permanent residence and citizenship applications (the other being TCF Canada).

The exam evaluates your French language proficiency using a point-based scoring system that is then converted to the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) or Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) scale. Your CLB/NCLC levels directly impact your eligibility for various immigration programs and your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score in Express Entry.
